Why is the FLAG POINT significant?
On 30th December 1943, the great Netaji Subash Chandra Bose unfurled the first tri-color flag in Andaman and Nicobar Island, declaring the islands free territory from British rule, even before India achieved had its independence. Not many of us know that the flag point is highly significant since it denotes this historical moment as it was this very spot where the flag hoists on free Indian soil for the first time.
After 75 years, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi hoisted the Indian flag on this flag point on its inaugural day, 30th December 2018, to honor this day and The Provisional Government of Free India.
Where is the flag point located?
The flag point lies at the capital city Port Blair in South Andaman Island. It is not very far from its core, thus making it accessible to locals and tourists visiting the islands. The distance is walkable in less than 15 minutes from the Water Sports Complex or Marina Park.
The flag point’s structure tributes a memorial of the freedom fighters who have fought fearlessly for our independence.
The construction almost looks like an open-theater where lights from around are focusing on the center. The center has a large structure built of the number ‘1943’, and under it, “1st Tri-color hoisting in India” is carved.

The flag point is famous amongst the islanders for relaxing upon the windy seaside. In addition, the view of Ross Island, renamed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island after the prominent Indian freedom-fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, is breathtaking.
On one side, there’s the beautiful blue sea. And on the other, small eateries like food trucks and roadside shops with very few buildings. The area is much like Marine Drive in Mumbai but with no traffic and the least crowded!
We feel a real sense of liberty as we cross the area, watching the flag swaying to the rhythm of the wind in slow motion. It takes you into an unusual zone of mind where you can think about nothing but love for the country and its people.
